Secular Franciscans are people of peace and justice. We live in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable. As St. Paul taught us, there is no difference between Jew and Gentile, slave or free. We therefore look beyond the obvious differences in our fellow men and women to embrace them for who they are and what they face in life. We recognize our society has problems that need to be addressed. We look for opportunities to come together and fix the brokenness in people’s lives, and in our systems.
Racism is the denial of human dignity, either individually or systemically, by complicity or complacency and attempts to diminish or dehumanize those affected. Racism is clearly a “pro-life” issue and needs to be treated as such. Let us learn to see both individually and fraternally what role we can have in healing the scars and wounds of racism, restoring the strength of community.
As Franciscans, we are called to be beacons of light in the world for all peoples, for in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” Franciscans are called to be instruments of God’s peace, and so let us be peacemakers for social justice and help stem the tide of racism and intolerance that continues to plague our community, country, and the world.

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every
human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.
We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when we have
failed to love and respect one another.
We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of
racism and to build a just society.
We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect
our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.
Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us.

Los franciscanos seglares son personas de paz y justicia. Vivimos en solidaridad con los pobres y vulnerables. Como nos enseñó San Pablo, no hay diferencia entre judíos y gentiles, esclavos o libres. Por lo tanto, miramos más allá de las diferencias obvias en nuestros hombres y mujeres para abrazarlos por lo que son y lo que enfrentan en la vida. Reconocemos que nuestra sociedad tiene problemas que deben abordarse. Buscamos oportunidades para unirnos y arreglar la rupture en la vida de las personas y en nuestros sistemas.
El racismo es la negación de la dignidad humana, ya sea individual o sistémicamente, por complicidad o complacencia e intentos de disminuir o deshumanizar a los afectados. El racismo es claramente un problema “pro-vida” y debe ser tratado como tal. Aprendamos a ver de manera individual y fraterna qué papel podemos tener en la curación de las cicatrices y heridas del racismo, restaurando la fuerza de la comunidad.
Como franciscanos, estamos llamados a ser faros de luz en el mundo para todos los pueblos, porque en Mateo 5: 9, “Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios”. Los franciscanos están llamados a ser instrumentos de la paz de Dios y, por lo tanto, seamos pacificadores de la justicia social y ayudemos a detener la ola de racismo e intolerancia que sigue afectando a nuestra comunidad, nuestro país y el mundo.

Te pedimos tu ayuda para invocar a tu Hijo, buscando el perdón por los momentos en los que hemos
fallado en amar y respetar el uno al otro.
Te pedimos tu ayuda para obtener de tu Hijo la gracia que necesitamos para vencer el mal de
racismo y para construir una sociedad justa.
Te pedimos tu ayuda para seguir a tu Hijo, para que los prejuicios y la animosidad ya no contagien
nuestras mentes o corazones pero serán reemplazados por un amor que respete la dignidad de cada persona.
Madre de la Iglesia, el Espíritu de tu Hijo Jesús calienta nuestros corazones: ruega por nosotros.
